My Love for Rock Music
My father was ever fascinated by country music and would never fail to play a track or two each day when he came home after work. He had a huge collection of country music albums some from the 70s and he loved track from the likes of Charley Pride, Dolly Parton, Conway Twitty, Kenny Rodgers, Loretta Lynn and many other artistes. He usually hummed along the rhythms of the music as they played on his old LP stereo.
He also used to own an old wooden acoustic guitar, and during weekend, he would take a rest at the backyards of our home play the guitar to the tunes of his lovely country music tracks. It was through him that I also got to know how to play the acoustic guitar. However, music was never my thing, and I rarely play the guitar even though I was good at it.
Throughout my childhood, I was raised in a strict family, and I never got any chance to attend discotheques or other concerts even when there was one in town like my peers did. There was a time that I tried to sneak out – I was in high school by then – and go to a concert, old to be nabbed red-handed by my dad who had gone out to check on his cows without my knowledge. That was my last attempt to ever sneak out again.
Always be ready to follow your Heart
When I joined college, things changed and took a new turn. In college, I had the freedom of doing most of what I missed in my childhood such as going to the discos since there was no one to stop me. One such weekend, we attended a rock and metal music concert with my peers. The experience was quiet awesome. Actually it was my first night out, and I really wanted to enjoy myself to the fullest.
There was nice music playing and there were pretty girls there, some of them my college mates. The night was fun and fantastic. As midnight was approaching, the rock artiste who had scheduled the concert took to the stage amid cheering and loud applause from the audience as they appreciated the music played. I wasn’t left behind, but my attention caught the one lady who was playing an electric guitar. She played it with all the passion and energy that she could muster.
This triggered my admiration as I nostalgically remembered playing the guitar as a kid. If there was a way that I could reach her that night and express my admiration for her enthusiasm, I could never have hesitated. However, there was no way that I could get past the security team even after the concert ended.
Practice Makes Perfect in Arts
The following day, I decided to use some of my saving to purchase an acoustic guitar. Had I more cash I could have purchased an electric one. That was my first step in my musical career. I’d often play the guitar in my free time and whenever there was a rock performance in town, I made sure that I attended one. In my pursuit to become better in music, I teamed up with Annah and Joan, two sisters in college who were good at singing rock music which was their passion. We would practice and produce various compositions, though we never became popular. Anyhow, we were contented in the relieve that we got from music.
There were times that we attended concerts together, just to have a glimpse of how better we could perfect our music just like other rock artistes. It was during one such attendance that I managed to talk to a music promoter and expressed my interest in rock and metal music. I talked to him about how we would love to get connected to other rock musicians.
I don’t know how convincing he was because he first asked me if we had any songs that we could perform. I responded to the positive. I didn’t know that he wanted us to be part of the curtain raisers that day. Of course we hadn’t prepared for such a thing. Even the day we were dressed that night itself was an indication that we had come to party just like other revelers.
However, this was a golden opportunity that we could never let go past us. I consulted my partners and within a half an hour, we were on stage. Though there was a little stage fright we managed to perform our best and the performance captured the attention of a local pop group who later contacted us so that we could produce a sing together. The song dubbed ‘One Stop’ became a hit and it eventually helped us to begin a new chapter in the music career.
